Can the solar glass modules withstand a hail?
Yes. Photovoltaic modules withstand a normal hail shower with normal grain sizes. see video https://youtu.be/0ObFgQhj0jE
Is the wood of the carports susceptible to the weather?
The supports are particularly susceptible to splashing water. That is why we use galvanized steel supports. Only the glass roof and the longitudinal trusses are made of wood. Most of the wooden parts are covered and therefore not exposed to the weather. To be on the safe side, do not use solid structural timber. We use glued wood made from spruce and larch. Glued binders are particularly resistant to shrinkage cracks. The surfaces are smooth and therefore not very sensitive to dirt. The forehead supports are also made of larch wood. Larch can be kept even in direct weather conditions without wood protection. The most important protection is to keep the wood dry. For this purpose, the following measures were taken:
1. Drip edge formed by overhanging the solar module attachment to the end supports
2. Physical wood protection through the use of EPDM foil in endangered areas
Optionally, the wood can also be painted white.
Aren't the posts annoying?
The posts are offset 120 cm to the rear, making it easy to park. Our parking spaces are designed according to ADAC guidelines to enable user-friendly parking. All doors can be opened in a normal car.
What is bifacial?
Bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules can use light from both sides and provide more yield (approx. + 15%) than normal PV modules . The amount of the additional yield depends on the module properties as well as the type of installation and the underground of the parking lot.

What to do with parking areas in the floodplain?
On Friday, July 9, 2021, the Aurach in Herzogenaurach rose over its banks and flooded parking areas. Is this one reason why such parking spaces are rated unsuitable for photovoltaic systems? LINK
We say no.
With our above-ground cabling system , building in floodplains is no problem. For this we use our newly developed accessories “holding pots and wide span channels”. This also makes it possible to build PV parking lot roofing in floodplain areas.
How long does a typical project take?
After the building permit, our proven schedule will be carried out after X weeks. If no parking space drawings exist, your parking space is first measured and checked for colliding lines. Our special foundations will be installed and the carports will be installed at the same time. Thanks to the prefabrication of the steel structure and the glass roof, assembly can be completed in just a few days. The cabling is then carried out without any major disruption to the parking lot operations. The duration of the network connection depends on the local network operator and cannot be precisely planned.
How long does it take to install the solar parking lot?
Since we use special foundations, our system can be installed in a few days. In a second step, the cabling takes place, but this does not affect the use of the parking space.
How long do the solar modules last?
The solar module will last for 25-30 years.
How do self-driving cars affect solar carports?
Driverless cars should be able to participate in road traffic in Germany as early as 2022. Autonomous vehicles of the so-called ” level four ” should then be allowed to drive on public roads on certain, fixed routes . The Bundestag has now passed the necessary law.
Autonomous driving will slowly gain acceptance. Bosch and Mercedes Benz have developed what is known as AVP (Automated Valet Parking). For this, the solar parking lot must have the necessary sensors and IT infrastructure so that automated parking works. We aim to work together.
Planning
In the case of deliveries by trucks, I am concerned that they will collide with the glass roof
We recommend our high system for truck deliveries. Truck freedom is then given in the tramlines.
Do i need a building permit?
Building law is a state matter in Germany. In most federal states, building a carport is a structural measure. The building project must therefore be approved by the responsible authorities with a special focus on border development.
In some federal states, carports with a wall height of up to 3m and a floor area of up to 50m 2 do not require approval. Our 2-person carport can therefore be set up in some federal states without a permit.
There is a legislative initiative that the provisions should be harmonized and simplified.
Can I build a solar carport when it is shaded?
Shading can take place through buildings and trees. In this case, no carport should be built at the affected parking spaces.
Should I light my parking lot?
The solar glass roof is translucent. The existing parking lot lighting is usually bright enough. Carport lighting, however, increases comfort in daily use.
What is a solar carport?
With a solar – carport you generate your own electricity and can keep your property or your electric vehicle supply. Our solar carport has a glass solar roof and is used as a covered parking space and power generator.
What do I do with the rainwater?
We recommend near-natural rain management. That means: Intervention in the parking lot irrigation and the water cycle should only be minor. Our roof skin is not 100% rainproof. The rainwater seeps into the subsoil through the roof joints and comes very close to the undeveloped state. The carport can optionally be provided with rain gutters. The rainwater is then discharged onto the property or rain collecting basin by means of a spout.
What do I have to do if I want to create a Sopago car park?
Step 1: Clarify owner, size of parking space, aerial photo, current electricity consumption and electricity costs per kWh.
Step 2: Photo documentation of the property and aerial photo, extract from the real estate cadastre, current, excerpt from the land register, land appraisal or development plan of the municipality, media plans / shaft plans (gas, water, electricity)
Step 3: A solar carport usually requires a building permit …
Step 4: A solar carport needs a connection to the power grid….

What are the options for how many solar parking spaces?
There are several aspects to consider here.
All obstructions in the parking lot should be avoided and trees have priority.
Interferences can be:
– Boundary buildings where the neighbors’ consent is not expected
– Areas
at risk of impact from heavy goods vehicle traffic – Distance rules to federal highways or other priority roads
– High-voltage lines
If the following parking space sizes are exceeded, the following must be observed:
Less than 42 parking spaces (system output <100kWp = fixed guaranteed feed-in tariff)
The generated solar power can optionally be consumed by yourself andthe surplus can be fed into the public grid. In Germany there is a fixed, guaranteed feed-in tariff. It makes economic and ecological sense to maximize your own consumption. The integration of large electrical consumers and the charging infrastructure into “load management” is becoming more and more important. “Load management” is the targeted digital control of producers and consumers with the aim of controlling their own consumption and obtaining attractive energy supplier tariffs. The energy supplier tariff is essentially driven by peak loads. Peak load refers to briefly occurring high demand for power in the power grid, e.g. from the charging infrastructure and large electrical consumers.
So: own consumption high and PV surplus in the consumers through load management.
Less than 320 parking spaces (system output <750kWp = direct marketing
obligation) There is the obligation to “direct marketing” on the electricity exchange and thus the obligation to feed into the public grid. Although it is called “direct marketing”, most plant operators do not market their electricity themselves. Instead, they delegate this task to a company that specializes in it. A so-called direct marketer. By cleverly choosing the direct marketer, the electricity can be sold on the electricity exchange and then consumed again.
So: High self-consumption and optimal direct marketer select
more than 320 parking spaces (system output> 750kWp = obligation of exclusivity)
There is an obligation of exclusive self-consumption (100%) or full feed-in (100%) into the public network.
In the case of exclusive self-consumption, storage systems are becoming more and more important in order to cover the electricity demand even at night.
In the case of an exclusive full feed, “PPAs” are becoming more and more important. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are still a young marketing instrument for renewable energies in Germany. In the course of the post-EEG phase, these long-term electricity supply contracts are increasingly becoming an option for plant operators in Germany.
So: high self-consumption, possibly plan for electricity storage and possibly conclude a PPA agreement
SOPAGO will be happy to advise you on optimization and is your partner for an economic implementation.
What is the best parking space layout for solar carports?
Well-arranged pitches are the best. Our system is equally efficient with a single-row or two-row arrangement. Parking spaces that are arranged at an angle can usually not be roofed so well. The column arrangement must be carefully analyzed. Solar areas also have to be reduced as they would otherwise protrude into the tramlines. This makes these areas easily uneconomical.
Financial
Can I also rent the Sopago car park?
Yes, it must be clarified whether the owner agrees and whether the land use is secured for 20 years. At the end of the term, the solar parking space can be dismantled again.
What does it depend on how much money you earn?
Amount of own electricity consumption and current electricity costs, number of parking spaces, amount of annual output (hours of sunshine, shade from trees, etc.)

Will the grid feed-in for solar carports be remunerated in accordance with the roof or open-air system?
The German Renewable Energy Sources – Act (EEG) regulates the feeding solar power into the grid and guarantees its fixed feed producers. The higher feed-in tariff is available for roof systems. Unfortunately, solar carports are not explicitly dealt with in the EEG, so that the clearing house had to try to clarify their classification as roof-top or open-air systems.
Result: Solar carports are to be paid for as roof systems.
REASON
In the sense of the EEG, solar carports are non-residential buildings with a PV system. It is disputed whether the solar carport is primarily used to generate electricity or primarily to protect people and cars. In terms of tax law, this question can have a significant impact on depreciation and thus on the return on the investment.
SPECIAL SITUATION
The solar carport is to be regarded as an open-space system if it is set up outdoors in accordance with Section 35 of the Building Code (BauGB), ie outside built-up areas. This could be critical in the case of supermarkets on the outskirts, for example.
Our opinion at Sopago is….
1. Laws and ordinances (EEG, tax, building law) must be supplemented by the new oneCategory solar carports. This makes it easier for the various specialist disciplines to assess, leads to accelerated building permits and avoids inconsistent implementation in the urgently needed energy transition.
2. Furthermore, we are of the opinion that solar carports with charging infrastructure should receive a higher feed-in tariff than roof systems, since solar carports with intelligent charging infrastructure consume electricity where it is produced and thus support the mobility transition without burdening the electricity grid.

How does it behave when an electric car is on fire?
No major fire hazard with an electric car
First of all, they don’t burn more often. This is confirmed by the General Association of German Insurers (GDV) Karl-Heinz Knorr “From electric cars to our estimates goes basically no higher fire risk than vehicles with internal combustion engines.”
“E-cars burn (…) neither violent nor common than gasoline or diesel, just different. ”says the Vice President of the German Fire Brigade Association.
The ADAC speaks of a comparatively low risk.

Sustainability
Does the production of PV modules consume more energy than they can deliver during operation?
The Frauenhofer Institute has examined this here .
The energy payback time is approx. 1 year for European production and operating locations.
With a lifespan of 25-30 years, this results in harvest factors greater than 20.
eMobility
Does it make sense to install battery system?
Yes it make sense to install battery system.

How many wall boxes or lines should I install?
The line capacities are usually the limit. For a standard solar parking lot, 2 wallboxes should be installed. If more wallboxes are required, load management must be installed.
Nationwide, parking spaces in non-residential buildings must now be provided with cables for electric car charging stations (every third parking space) in order to be able to retrofit wallboxes ( GEIG ).

Politics
Should builders of larger parking spaces be obliged to cover them with solar systems?
The idea of using sealed parking spaces is understandable, but from our point of view it should not be mandatory across the board. It is also difficult to determine a mandatory parking space.
We think funding is more effective than an obligation for the following reasons:
Profitability: If the investment pays off, every builder will be happy to make the investment. The construction costs are indeed increased, but increase notthe rents if you skillfully use the solar power yourself. Our calculations show that with our solar carport system from 30 parking spaces an investment makes sense. The number of parking spaces increases if an expensive solar carport system (design carports) is used or if there are above-average costs for the grid connection (transformer) or above-average start-up costs.
Trees and greenery are becoming more and more important for the client. Trees provide shade, absorb heat, filter fine dust and promote wellbeing. A mix of trees and solar carports should be the goal. That is why you need a solar carport system that fits in and can deal with shading. Ideally, a solar carport system only intervenes slightly in the rainwater cycle.
Glare: Neighbors do not want to look at a dazzling solar system. The solar carport system should not only use glare-free solar modules, but ideally glass-glass solar modules should be used, as they are translucent and therefore less glare.
